It is an enormous honour to welcome you all to Philadelphia and the 39th World Championships in Irish Dancing. It is truly fitting that the city known as the Cradle of Liberty and the Birthplace of America is now host to the first World Championships to be held on this side of the Atlantic.

It is very true to say that these Championships have been the most anticipated to date, with planning for them starting four years ago. The logistics have at time been overwhelming but the effort given freely by so many officers and volunteers to ensure a well organised event has been outstanding. Well done indeed to all involved! This is by far the largest Championships to date with over 6,000 competitors representing over 400 schools from all five continents in attendance.

Such has been the interest that we have had to source an additional venue to host some of the competitions. However, whether you are scheduled to dance at the magnificent Kimmel Center or the friendly Marriott Hotel, we have tried to ensure that all competitors experience a truly wonderful time dancing on exceptional world class stages.

It would be remiss of me not to thank the numerous officers and helpers involved in putting this huge celebration of dance together in such an enthusiastic manner. There are far too many people for me to name in person but I must particularly thank our office staff, Maire, Lisa, Sinead and Lily for their constant effort and attention to detail. I would also take this opportunity to thank the staff of the Kimmel Center , Marriott Hotel and Philadelphia Convention and Visitor Bureau for all of their assistance and co-operation over the past years. Gratitude also must be extended to all our sponsors and advertiser.

Finally, I would particularly thank my Vice-Chair people, Pat O'Connor Keaney and Terry Gillan for their endless support and enthusiasm. Terry, in particular had a very difficult task in organising everything on this side of the pond and we should all appreciated the enormous sacrifices that he has endured to get the Championships ready.

There is a very extensive programme of social activities planned for the week in the Marriott Hotel. All attendees of the Championships whether resident in the Marriott Hotel or not are invited to come together each evening and join in the many celebratory events being hosted there. Lisa and Karen Petri have put this calendar of events together so I am sure there will be many surprises in store. I look forward to meeting friends old and new at one of these events, whether it is at the Teachers Reception, the fun Heaven and Hell Party, the Graduation Ball, Club Chaos or one of the many themed Lobby Parties.

I do hope that you enjoy your visit to Philadelphia , the 5th largest city in North America . In such a historic city there are a huge number of things to see and do ranging from Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence was signed, the timeless and unique Liberty Bell to those famous “Rocky Steps” which have inspired so many people to reach for their dreams.

I wish all teachers and competitors every success in the next eight days of Championships and hope you all leave Philadelphia with many happy memories of the first World Championships hosted in North America .

Let the Happy Championships begin!
