Janice Currie Henderson

I commenced Irish Dancing at the age of 6 at the convent school with my sisters Patsy and Marie.   Our paternal grandmother Mary Moore came from Rhode County  Offally and this had an influence on our lives.   My teacher was Thelma Harris RIP she had a very successful school in Sydney some years later Erin O'Daly RIP opened her school.

My memories of irish dancing as a child are full of happiness ,entertaining Irish and Australians of Irish descent at concerts and in Convalescent Homes,  competitions were a small part if our lives.    I was blessed to have a very successful career in Eisteddfods , St. Patrick's Day sports and NSW state  and Australian Championships .  I was approached by the INA the major irish organisation in NSW to becone a teacher because there was a great shortage at the time.

I started the Janice Currie Academy of Irish Dancing in 1959 and went on to have great success with the 100s of pupils who graced the doors ,where I am fondly known as "Miss Jan."    In 1960 a very hansome young man came into my life  Bob Henderson and we married and were blessed with 4 beautiful sons Robert,Michael ,Andrew  and Craig. The boys danced except Robert..he ran...In 1969 Bob and I travelled to Ireland to study for my TCRG and ADCRG under the guidance of the late great Marie Walsh RIP  I was one of the first Australians to receive the ADCRG.

I have since juded in all States of Australia andin New Zealand   in Columbus USA  Los Angeles on a number of occasions at the World I was the first Australian invited to judge the All Ireland I also  judged the World cships in 2005 .  I have been an Examiner over 20 Years .   Our son Craig was in Riverdance for 8 years and retired as Dance captain in 2005  I was honoured and priviled to receive the Gradam Rince Award of Distinction in 2007 and am very honoured to be judging the first  World Championsips held in the USA.
